Thousands of people start Google Ads certifications every year, but many never finish because the training feels overwhelming, trust me when I say overwhelming. The certification also seems confusing to a complete beginner. The good news is that I am a complete beginner and I managed to sort out a methodical way of working through the various certifications.
I blog about my experience in these series of blog posts, I hope it helps to make your journey easier.
Google provides a lot of free resources at Google Skillshop. I would however strongly recommend that you read some of my posts, to help you make head from tail of the series of options available to you at Google Skillshop.
Understand the Different Google Ads Certifications Before You Start.
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is assuming there is only one Google Ads certification. In reality, Google offers several certifications, each focused on a different advertising area.
Before studying, you need to know the ones to learn in the right order because the certifications are all scattered.
The right order to learn the Google Ads certifications is:
- Google ads search (foundation): This was the first certification I began with and I would recommend you should begin with this too. This certification has 8 different sections including the exams. It basically teaches you how to make businesses show up on Google when people are actively searching for something.
For me, it felt like learning the psychology behind Google searches, understanding what people type, why they type it, and how to place the right ad in front of them at the perfect moment. It’s less about “posting ads” and more about connecting businesses with people already looking for solutions.
- Google ads measurement: This section teaches you how to know whether your ads are actually working or wasting money.
Personally, I see it as the “results tracking” side of Google Ads. Instead of just running ads and hoping for the best, you learn how to measure what people do after clicking, like purchases, sign-ups, calls, or website visits. Basically, it helps you answer: “Did this ad really bring results?”
- Google analytics:
This certification teaches you how to understand what people do on a website after they visit.
Personally, it feels like learning how to “read customer behavior online.” You see where visitors came from, what pages they viewed, how long they stayed, what they clicked, and whether they completed actions like buying or signing up. Basically, it turns website visitors into understandable data instead of just random numbers.
- Google ads display:
teaches you how to create visual ads that appear across websites, apps, and YouTube, not just on Google search results.
It feels more like digital billboard marketing. Instead of waiting for people to search, you learn how to put eye-catching ads in front of people while they browse online.
- Google ads video:teaches you how to run video ads mainly on YouTube and other video partner platforms.
To me, it feels like learning how to use storytelling and visuals to grab attention online. Instead of text or banner ads, you learn how short videos can influence people to notice a brand, take action, or remember a product. Basically, it’s about using videos to market smarter, not just posting random content.
- Shopping ads: Shopping Ads teaches you how online stores promote products directly on Google with pictures, prices, reviews, and store details.
It feels like learning how to turn Google into a digital shop display. Instead of people only seeing text ads, they instantly see the actual product before clicking. it’s designed for e-commerce businesses that want their products to appear when people search to buy something.
Understanding the differences early helps you avoid information overload and allows you to focus on mastering one area at a time.
A smart strategy is to build your certifications gradually instead of trying to pass everything in one week.
Learn the Fundamentals of PPC Before Attempting the Exams.
To navigate the certification successfully, you must first understand how Google Ads actually works.
Focus on learning:
- Keyword match types
- Search intent
- Quality Score
- Ad Rank
- Cost-per-click (CPC)
- Conversion tracking
- Audience targeting
- Smart bidding strategies
- Landing page optimization
When you understand these concepts properly, the exam questions become much easier because you can logically work through them instead of guessing.
One of the best ways to learn faster is to combine theory with hands-on practice. Even a small test campaign can teach you more than hours of watching tutorials.
For example, running a simple campaign with a small budget helps you understand how impressions work, why some keywords cost more, how click-through rates affect performance, why ad relevance matters, how Google decides which ads appear first.
Google Ads become far less intimidating once you see how campaigns behave in real time.
Use Google Skillshop Strategically Instead of Random Tutorials.
We all know Google Skillshop is the official learning platform for Google Ads certifications, but many people use it incorrectly, they either skip sections too quickly, memorize answers without understanding concepts, ignore practical examples or study inconsistently.
To navigate the certification successfully, treat Skillshop like a structured course, not just a test portal. A better study approach is:
Step-by-Step Google Ads Study Strategy.
- Complete one module fully before moving to another.
- Take notes in your own words.
- Pause to research unfamiliar advertising terms (I did this a lot).
- Practice creating campaigns while learning.
- Review incorrect quiz answers carefully.
- Repeat difficult sections instead of rushing.
Avoid depending entirely on “exam answer websites.” Google updates questions regularly, and memorized answers often become outdated quickly.
Finally, If you stay consistent, practice regularly, and focus on real understanding rather than shortcuts, you can become highly skilled in Google Ads much faster than most people expect.
If you want structured hands-on Google Ads training, practical assignments, and mentorship, you can join the Google Ads training programme at Certification.
