Personal Experiences with Divi Builder

I’ve personally been using Divi Builder for a few years to create blog posts, landing pages, and websites for various projects. One of the things I love most about Divi is the ability to quickly design professional-looking posts without needing to write a single line of code.

For example, when I first started using Divi for blog posts, I was able to experiment with different layouts and content arrangements using its drag-and-drop features. I found that Divi’s ability to customize everything from fonts to colors, and even layout structure, made it incredibly easy to match my blog’s branding and style.

In one of my personal projects, I created a blog post that included a series of tutorial videos, images, and text. By using Divi’s built-in video module, I was able to embed the videos seamlessly into the post without compromising the overall design. I also used the image module to display high-quality photos and a custom-made infographic, which helped to boost reader engagement.

Step 1: Accessing the WordPress Post Editor

To begin, navigate to your WordPress dashboard. On the left-hand sidebar:

  1. Click on Posts.

2. Select Add a New Post

step 1

This will open the
Standard WordPress Editor, where we’ll first set up our post title, featured image, categories, tags, and excerpt before moving to Divi Builder.

At the top of the page, you’ll notice a button prompting you to use Divi Builder. However, before we proceed with Divi, we need to ensure that our blog post is properly structured in the standard editor first.

Step 2: Setting Up the Blog Post in the Standard Editor

Before switching to Divi Builder, let’s complete a few essential setup steps:

1. Adding a Blog Post Title

The title of your blog post is one of the most important elements, as it should be clear, engaging, and SEO-friendly.

For example:

2. Setting a Featured Image

Your featured image is the main image that represents your blog post. To add it:

  • Look at the right-hand panel and locate the Featured Image section.
  • Click Set Featured Image and upload your chosen image.

Don’t forget to add Alt Text for SEO and accessibility.

3. Writing an Excerpt

The excerpt is a short summary of your blog post that appears on your homepage and blog archive pages.

To add an excerpt:

  • Scroll down to the Excerpt section.
  • Write a concise and engaging summary of your post.

 Example:
“Want to create beautiful blog posts using Divi? This guide walks you through everything from adding text modules to structuring your layout with sections, rows, and modules.”

Step 3: Categorizing and Tagging Your Blog Post

Properly categorizing and tagging your blog posts improves content organization and SEO.

Understanding Categories

Categories are broad topics that group similar blog posts together.

For example, if you have a food blog, you might have categories such as:

  • Recipes
  • Restaurant Reviews
  • Cooking Tips

If your blog post is about a pasta recipe, you’d categorize it under “Recipes.”

Understanding Tags

Tags are specific keywords that describe the content of your blog post in more detail.

For a pasta recipe post, the tags might include:

  • Italian Cuisine
  • Homemade Pasta
  • Dinner Recipes

How to Add Categories and Tags

  • On the right-hand panel, locate the Categories section. Select an existing category or create a new one.
  • Below that, find the Tags section and add relevant keywords that describe your post’s content.

Tip: Avoid using too many categories and tags—stick to relevant ones for better content organization.

Step 6: Understanding Divi’s Structure – Sections, Rows, and Modules

Now that we are inside the Divi Visual Builder, here are the key elements you should know:

  1. Blue Plus(+) Icon –  Adds a new Section to your page.
  2. Green Plus(+) Icon – Adds a new Row within a section.
  3. Black Plus(+) Icon –  Adds a Module (Text, Image, Video, etc.) inside a row.

Before adding content, let’s understand
Divi’s hierarchy:

1. Sections (Blue Borders)

  • The largest building block in Divi.
  • Holds rows and modules inside.
  • Can be Regular, Fullwidth, or Specialty Sections.

2. Rows (Green Borders)

  • Rows go inside sections and contain columns.
  • Layout options include:
    • 1 Column (Full-width text or image)
    • 2 Columns (Text on one side, image on the other)
    • 3+ Columns (More advanced layouts)

3. Modules (Black Borders)

  • The actual content elements inside rows.
  • Examples include:
    • Text Module (for writing content)
    • Image Module (for adding visuals)
    • Video Module (for embedding videos)

Step 7: Adding and Formatting Content in Divi Builder

1. Adding a Text Module

Important: Don’t be tempted to copy and paste all your content at once. Instead, add it section by section, ensuring proper formatting and using the right module for the right content.

    To add text:

      1. Click the Black Plus Icon to add a module.
      2. Search for Text Module and select it.
      3. Replace the default text with your blog content.
      4. Highlight text to:
        • Change headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.)
        • Apply bold, italic, or underline formatting
        • Insert hyperlinks

    Why is this important?

You don’t want to accidentally place an image or video inside a Text Module. Instead, use the appropriate module for each content type to maintain a structured layout.

    2. Adding Images the Right Way

    What is Alt Text?
Alt Text (Alternative Text) is a description of an image that helps:

    • Visually impaired users understand what the image represents.

    • Search engines rank your images properly in search results.

To add an image in Divi Builder:

    1. Click the Black Plus Icon to add a module.

    2. Search for Image Module and select it.

    3. Upload your image and add Alt Text.

    2. Click ‘Save Draft’ if you’re not ready to publish yet.
    3. Click ‘Publish’ to make your post live.

    Advanced Tips and Customizations

While Divi Builder provides great default modules, sometimes you may want to go beyond the basics. Here are a few advanced tips to take your Divi-powered blog post to the next level:

    • Custom CSS for Advanced Styling
Divi offers the option to add custom CSS, which allows you to fine-tune the styling of specific elements on your page. For instance, you could add custom styles to headings or buttons, such as:

    html snippet

This will change the button color across all pages where you’ve used the Divi button module.

    • Using Divi’s Dynamic Content
If you’re running a blog with dynamic content, such as custom post types or multiple authors, you can leverage Divi’s dynamic content functionality to automatically display data like author names, post dates, and category links. This keeps your posts up-to-date without manual intervention.

    • Using Conditional Logic with Divi
To create personalized blog posts for your readers, Divi allows you to apply conditional logic to modules. You can display different content based on conditions such as user roles or the time of day. This feature is great for creating targeted content for specific audiences.

    Common Pitfalls and Solutions

Even with an intuitive builder like Divi, there are some common mistakes that users often make when creating blog posts. Here’s how to avoid them:

    1. Overusing Sections and Rows
While Divi allows you to add multiple sections and rows, it’s important to avoid overcrowding your post with unnecessary sections. Too many sections can lead to a disorganized and clunky design. Solution: Stick to the essentials and keep your layout clean by combining rows into a single section whenever possible.
    2. Not Optimizing for SEO
One mistake I made early on was neglecting SEO when designing posts with Divi. Divi’s visual builder doesn’t automatically optimize images for SEO, such as adding alt text to images or properly structuring headings for SEO. Solution: Always add alt text to your images and use proper heading tags (H1, H2, etc.) for better SEO.
    3. Poor Mobile Optimization
Another mistake is not checking how the blog post looks on mobile devices. Divi’s responsive design features make it easy to optimize for different screen sizes, but you still need to manually tweak some settings. Solution: Always preview your post in mobile view and make sure everything looks great before publishing.
    4. Not Using Caching or Minification
Large images or poorly optimized pages can slow down your site’s loading time, which affects the user experience. Solution: Use Divi’s built-in caching options and consider using a caching plugin to speed up your website. Additionally, optimize your images before uploading them to improve load times.

Creating a blog post with Divi Builder not only enhances the visual appeal but also improves readability and engagement. Whether you’re running a personal blog or a business website, using Divi Builder allows you to design stunning, well-structured posts effortlessly.
