Social Media as a new addiction among Internet users

March 22, 2010

social media addictionWhen Television came to its highest peak, the rumors that people started to be TV-addicted begin spreading. Nowadays, a new “menace to society” seems to arise, and that is the so-called social media.
While this is a new method of getting in touch with new persons, growing a business or just having fun, the social media wave also tends to replace spending time with real-life friends and family.

The latest study created by Retrevo Gadgetology – the Retrevo Gadgetology Report – revealed some interesting facts about social media users. They invited users to share their habits when it comes to social media, habits like: how much of their time they spend on websites like Facebook and Twitter, where do they check those websites from and what part of the day is the most “occupied” with verifying news about their social media accounts or emails.

According to this report, people are very preoccupied in checking their social media status whether is day or night, when going to bed. Almost half of them (48%) say they verify Facebook or/and Twitter accounts from bed or as soon as they wake up. More than a half (61%) among users under 25 years old have to login to Facebook every single day.

Here are some other interesting numbers from the report:

18% of people under 25 years old cannot go more than a couple hours without checking in on Facebook
55% of people over 25 have to check in on Facebook at least once a day
16% of people under 25 years old rely on Twitter and/or Facebook for the morning “news”
28% of iPhone users check/update Twitter before they get out of bed
11% of people under 25 years old can be interrupted by an electronic message during sex (The number drops to 6% of people over 25 years old)
24% of people under 25 can be interrupted by an electronic message while in the bathroom. (This number drops to 12% of people over age 25)

Surprisingly as it may seem, 11% of under 25 years old Internet users have no problem being interrupted by an email when having sex. Could emails/social media be better than sex, is there a hidden secret regular people do not know about?

This is not a single study on social media/Internet addiction issue. A couple of years ago, Intel did a study on the “Internet and sex” and Retrevo had another one about Twitter being the new after-sex cigarette.

Dot xxx adult domain to be considered by ICAN

March 9, 2010

Top level porn domain to be considered by ICANN board

The domain extension creation season seem to be upon us again. A few days after Nomine, the UK domain name registration authority started a consultative process to create one and two character domain names along with a host of other domain name extensions withing the .uk domain name space, the sponsors of another domain name extension, the top level extension .xxx were getting ready to push for the creation of their domain extension.

.xxx domain extension which the sponsor want to create specifically for website with adult contents went before ICANN for approval about three years ago but the plan was not approved. The sponsors have dust their proposals down and are putting it before ICANN again on the 12t of March 2010 at their meeting in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

Sponsors of .xxx domain were buoyed by the conclusion of an independent panel that looked into rejection of the domain extension about three years ago, the panel said: “decision to reject .xxx domain was unfair and that the plan should be reconsidered.” members of ICANN may be forced to back the plan to create the exclusively adult website domain extension in a few days time.

One avid domain name property speculator and adult website webmaster said “creation of .xxx domain extension will actually be good for the Internet safety because network administrator will find it easy to ban juveniles access to all website with the .xxx domain extension” creation of this new extension will also be good for the domain name industry.

Another webmaster said “the porn domain extension is like the beast in the eagle song hotel California, ICANN just cannot kill the beast”, they have been trying to kill it off for many years but I have a feeling it will be approved this time” he added.

Fingers crossed to see if this contention domain extension will indeed be approved the second time its going for approval by ICANN boards.

Online fraudsters targetting more women

March 2, 2010

internet_fraud

Even though the classic victim of online fraudsters are men aged around 40, Cifas, an UK fraud prevention service, released a report which claims that actually a higher number of women is targeted by online scammers these days. Cifas also states that total number of reported swindles increased to 235,452 in 2009, a 10% more infractions than 2008.

2009 faced also a 32% more online identity theft in contrast with 2008. Most cases when bank accounts were broken were incriminating online fraudsters, so it seems that they do not use anymore just targeted victims, but they commit infractions on anyone they are able to.

Online frauds are constantly increasing day by day and methods used are getting more ingenuous, from traditional phishing emails to setting up fraud websites that can take advantage on every small piece of private information stolen, so online protection must be something to keep an eye on.

A well-positioned Romanian source informs me that fraudsters from Romania came to England just to perpetrate this kind of online fraud, being specialized on credit card data stealing and hoax emails for banking accounts’ data lift.

On the other hand, 2009 was also the year of online fraud detection’s level increase, due to more rigid lending criteria in UK banking field. It seems that this move allowed the authorities to observe on this situation more strictly and a higher number of loans applicants had to be turned down,so numbers of online infractions attempts stopped in time has increased.
