My Story: How Facebook Advertising Performed vs. Google AdWords” by Karen James on Moz blog. “In a 2014 study conducted by Neustar, social media advertising was found to be the most effective form of online paid advertising for increasing impressions, clicks and conversions at a low cost.”

It is true. As a certified Adwords professional, I can say that in the past few years CPCs in very competitive niches increased significantly. I think one of the reasons is that Google Adwords did not have real competitors in the PPC niche. Their analytics system+targeting options is really fantastic and you can reach those people that you are targeting. But Facebook advertising in recent years has improved quite a lot. Combine this with the number of users who visit the Facebook platform every day and you will see that FB PPC is something that you should consider when doing paid advertising.
