Internationalised domain names (IDNs) to be a reality soon
March 10, 2007 · Print This Article
ICANN announced that it has successfully tested internationalised domain names (IDNs), thereby moving the date IDNs would go live on the Internet closer. At present, characters allowed in domain names are limited to 37 characters which consists of letters, numbers and some symbols. There is always pressure on ICANN to include characters other thank the Western alphabets and number in domain name so that countries and societies with different alphabet and symbol can use characters from their alphabets in their domain names.
ICANN has only recently allowed the use of numbers in domain name after intense lobbying for companies such as 3COM who could not have a domain name with the number “3″ in their domain name in those days.
ICANN has not announced a date when IDNs will go live, but it announced the result of the laboratory test of IDNs it carried out in October 2006. ICANN said the IDNs test was to establish the impact of incorporating IDNs on the operations of the root servers.
