Web 3.0 – Semantically Speaking

October 20, 2007 · Print This Article

Most Internet users moved quietly, unknowingly, from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. In simple terms, Web 1.0 is just the simple static website you create to dish out information. You, the owner of the site can make changes to your site when you like. All visitors to your site can do is just consume the information you put on your site.

Along came Web 2.0, with more flexibility, users do not just visit your site to view information you dished out, they can interact with your contents, add, remove, manipulate and contribute to your contents, popularly know as user generated web, some Web 2.0 examples includes YouTube, MySpace, Facebook etc.

The next evolution of the web is Web 3.0, so called semantic web, which is supposed to be capable of understanding words. Unlike the current generation of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 powered sites and search engine, a Web 3.0 powered search engine will be more powerful, instead of searching with keywords, you can type question into a semantic web powered engine and the search engine would understand and fetch a accurate result for you.

Radar Networks, one of the companies that has been researching and developing Semantic Web, recently launch a Web 3.0 powered site called Twine.
Twine is described as “a new service for sharing, organizing and finding information with people you trust” as the name implies, Twine helps you tie various applications and information into one central place, thereby enabling you to bring the “collective intelligence of your friends, colleagues, groups and teams” together.

This writer is quite keen to test-drive Twine, the site is online but its seems you cannot use it just yet.
