Warner Inventors to End Format War?

September 21, 2006 · Print This Article

More hybrid disc format speculation as new patent surfaces.

Blu-Ray. HD-DVD. The battle for the next-gen disc format is even dirtier than the console war, but inventors at Warner might have come up with a way for the companies to cease fire. According to VNUnet the bright minds at Warner Home Video have applied for a patent that would create a single disc that would hold HD-DVD, Blu-Ray and DVD information.

What could this mean for games? In theory Blu-Ray and HD-DVD would only exist in their respective players and manufacturers could press both kinds of games onto a single disc, but would they? Or would Sony and Microsoft discourage the practice because both have much to gain by their supported formats (Sony’s Blu-Ray and the Microsoft-backed HD-DVD) penetrating the marketplace.
