Search Engine Optimisation and Web Hosting
November 2, 2007 · Print This Article
A web hosting company advertises excellent deal on web hosting using Google AdWords, targeted at UK consumers responded to the advert, had a quick look on their website, visited ‘about us’ page to learn more about the company only to find out that they are actually a USA company. This is usually not a big problem, giving the strengths of Pounds against the Dollars, buying in US is actually much cheaper than buying in UK.
I asked the company where their servers are located and I was informed that they are all located in the USA. Now this could be a problem the most important one being the fact that the server response time will be marginally slower than server located say at a data centre in Docklands, London or Manchester (To people accessing it from UK at any rate). The second significant problem the fact that the site may not rate well for UK keywords. Search engine that uses geo IP locator to serve SERPs will assume the site is a USA site hence will not rate it well for UK related keywords.
Anyway, the above is the accepted common wisdom in the SEO community but, which I have been abiding by since I come to know about it but I must say from my personal experience, that has not been the case. I have a few sites hosted in USA that ranks absolutely brilliantly for UK keywords.
I would like to hear other search engine optimisation consultants take on this issue.
