November 23, 2007 · Print This Article

Nominet, the organization that manages the .uk domain name space has been awarded the contract to run tier 1 registry for ENUM.  The contract was awarded to Nominet by BERR, the new name for Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) the same arm of UK government that awarded the managements of .UK domain name to Nominent.

ENUM is said to unify traditional telephony and next-generation IP networks, and provides a critical framework for mapping and processing diverse network addresses. The IP network part of ENUM would merge traditional telephone services including VoIP with domain names. The suite of protocols in EMU  makes it possible to relate a domain name to a telephone number, and then use that domain name to identify various communications devices such as fax, mobile phone, voice-mail, email, IP telephony addresses or web pages.

The contract was announced on Nominent website, however no mention was made of a time table or information on how Nominet will proceed with development of ENUM.
