Dedicated Server Hosting

March 9, 2007 · Print This Article

Dedicated server hosting is a term that has been cropping up more and more in online circles as time has gone by. The reason for this is that as online businesses and in some cases personal websites become more and more complex, there is an increasing demand for resources and usage that other server solutions just aren’t able to provide in a reasonably cost-effective manner.

Before we go into the advantages and disadvantages of dedicated server hosting, it is important to understand just what this type of hosting is. When you go to a web host, sign up for an account and choose to host your domain name with them, in most cases you are sharing a server with at least one other person. In many cases you can be sharing a server with all of their other clients and dozens if not hundreds of other websites are using that same server as you. For people that have large amounts of content that they need to put on their website or alternatively a large amount of visitors each month (or both), then they will reach a point where normal web hosting just isn’t going to cut it. These people need their own server for their own website so that hosting doesn’t become a problem for them. They need dedicated server hosting.

Dedicated server hosting is simply just using one server for one website or network of websites. All of the larger online companies (like eBay) have such gigantic infrastructures that anything except for dedicated server hosting simply wouldn’t make sense to them from a financial standpoint. Dedicated server hosting allows you exceptional freedom to an extent that normal hosting couldn’t possibly hope to match. A dedicated server for your website allows you to monitor and directly change all of your server settings (since you’ll only be affecting your own website, not anyone else’s), as well as set your own bandwidth and storage levels. In addition, you will be able to monitor and deal with any downtime problems yourself instead of having to wait for the company, which in itself is something that many people like about dedicated server hosting.

The one major drawback to dedicated server hosting is the price. Because of the use of one server for one client, dedicated server hosting is much more expensive than normal web hosting. Even the prices at discount hosts might give you pause when you see them for the first time, but for all of the advantages afforded by dedicated server hosting as well as the peace of mind, many users are confident that the large price is worth it.

If you have reached the point where you feel that you might be in need of dedicated server hosting, then it pays to research the issue a little bit and come up with a few dedicated server hosts that offer decent prices. From that point onwards, you’ll at least have a reference frame from which you can pick a host that is right for you.
