cPanel – Makes Hosting admin easy

Web hosting forum at UK Webmaster forums is one of the most lively forums, with members discussing various aspects of web hosting, web administration, server management and other issues that could make a webmaster’s hosting needs as easy as possible. Most webmasters at the forum agreed that cPanel is certainly the most user friendly server control panel software. This prompted new webmasters asking the question; what is cPanel, for this reason this blog was written to shed lights on the capabilities of cPanel and then compare it briefly with other control panel software. cPanel is basically a control panel that makes web site administration easy. Like many other web site administration software in the market, cPanel has a graphical user interface and automates most administrative tasks. However, there are a number of differences between cPanel and other web hosting software.

cPanel is a proprietary software that is distributed by cPanel Inc. The software is intended for use by commercial web hosting companies, who in turn make it available to their customers by bundling this along with their operating system software. The main attractions of cPanel include a user-friendly interface, easy operation, low learning curve, and support for a number of popular Linux operating environments including SUSE, Mandriva, CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and cAos. Installation and maintenance are made easy with the help of an auto-installing software and a choice of scripts. This make the job of working with the software possible for people who have little or no prior technical knowledge or exposure.

cPanel has two separate modules intended for use by Web Hosting managers and administrators, whose tasks typically involve creating new user accounts, add or drop sites, change passwords, see the bandwidth used, and installation of secure site certificates. The scripts that come with cPanel hosting make installation of a number of third party applications easy by automating them. However, cPanel does not automate the updates to these software. cPanel also provides support to automatically upgrade some applications such as Apache, PHP, MySQL, and applications built using them. cPanel does this by managing these software independently without involving the system software that supports them. This is seen both as an advantage and a complication, as it complicates the installation of newer version of all such software.

cPanel hosting also supports a separate module that enables resellers and users to access their control panels and carry out the relevant tasks. cPanel comes with an optional add-on program that automates tasks such as account creation and email notification.
