Bid for Position V Keyword Tags

July 22, 2007

Fashion come and go on the high streets, same on the Internet, fashion and trends comes and goes.  Recently, perhaps just under two years or so, keyword link tags were the in things, in the site promotion world. You choose a keyword, that keyword is linked to your chosen URL.

Unlike web directories, tagged keywords are not arranged into categories, they all appear on the homepage of the keyword tag site along with about one hundred or so other keyword tags that may or may not be linked to a URL.

Link tagging gradually faded into oblivion as bid for position directories become more popular and take keyword-tagging place.

Bid for position is replacing link tags fast. In the past, if you do not want to start a full-featured web directory, link tag is the lightweight alternative, very quick to set up, does not require too many parameters to configure. Now, bid for position is an easy to set up as link tag directory.

Another reason bid for position web directories are being favoured over link tags is revenue generating potential. A decent link a tag site should not have more than ninety-nine links on its homepage. By the time most link a tag sites reached forty links, it start looking scrambled and ugly, not may people would pay to have a site listed on such site.
With Bid for position directory, the revenue generation potential is endless because of multiple categories; each category can list ninety nice sites and still be compliant with Google preferred maximum link per page.

Bidding directory, like most form of bidding, be it in real life or in the virtual world pitches one person against the other, as one person tries to out bid the other to stay on top of the front page, this helps the bid for position owner realise maximum revenue for his website.

Leading Dir – A Leading source of site promotion

June 10, 2007

Leading Dir

Leading Dir is a fast growing Web Directory, which brings a new dimension to the Web Directory industry. In addition to listing sites under categories, sub categories and pages, Leading Dir actually put contents on each page sites are listed on, thus making the listing appear to be part of site contents rather than a plain Web Directory listing in the traditional senses.
This method of listing gives a link the added benefit of being seen to be listed as part of contents, thereby giving additional weight the link from search engine ranking point of view.

If you are thinking of adding your site to Leading Dir, you have three inclusion options; Featured link which comes with the option to add additional five URLs from the same site, Regular links which allows you to add three additional urls from sub pages of your site and Reciprocal link listing, which is the same listing option as the Regular listing but you need to link back to Leading Dir instead of paying for your listing.
Whatever option you choose, a listing in Leading Dir could give your website ranking in search engines a boost as well as bring you direct traffic.

Leading Dir homepage can be found here, direct link to the submission page can be found here

Interview with David DuVal PHPLD Creator by Temi Odurinde

May 30, 2007

PHP Link Directory, popularly know as PHPLD is a leading web directory script, it was created by David DuVal of NetCreated. Recently Temi Odurinde has been interviewing prominent players in the web directory industry, including webmasters, web directory operators and of course the people like David DuVal, who make creating a web directory easy with scripts such as PHPLD.

David answered all the sensible questions Temi Odurinde put to him (via email), being the ridiculous guy Temi is, after David DuVal answered all the sensible and serious questions such as issues about PHPLD, web directory and other stuff, Temi then put the “fun questions” David, silly questions such as “what you will do if you are the president of Cybeland” but David has a good sense of humour as he answered the fun questions :)

You can read the full ‘serious’ interview with David DuVal at UK Webmaster Forums, you can read the fun interview right here on this blog.

David DuVal Inerview – The Fun Quesions

Temi Odurinde – If the Internet was to have a President and you were elected President of the net, what changes would you make on your first day in office?David DuVal – I don’t think I would accept that office. Too much stress. :)

Temi Odurinde – What are your top five favourite sites?

David DuVal – www.dance-forums.com, www.phplinkdirectory.com, www.youtube.com, www.digg.com, www.slashdot.com

Temi Odurinde – Take out your Crystal ball, give us a snap shot of how you see your segment of the online world evolving.

David DuVal – Larger directories will become portals like Yahoo. Yahoo started much like a base installation of phpLD.

Temi Odurinde – How many cups of coffee do you drink a day?

David DuVal – Only 2. That is all the caffeine I drink.

Temi Odurinde – What is your favourite Music?

David DuVal – Ballroom dance music, especially Waltz, Cha Cha, Foxtrot and Tango.

Temi Odurinde – Who or what do you find inspirational?

David DuVal – My grandfather who helped me get a more positive attitude during some trying times. In one letter he sent this:

TIGER

T – Tolerance – people are different, but you have to be empathetic and try to understand what makes them the way they are

I – Integrity – you will encounter lots of people that took a “shortcut to success”, but over time it will be honesty that insures you live a successful and gratifying life.

G - Generosity – when you can give of yourself without focusing on the return, but just do it because you want to help, you will receive far more than you ever imagined, but it might not be exactly the way you thought it might be

E – Enthusiasm – it’s easy to have a good day, but it is the people that can find enthusiasm within them even during the downtimes that will be able to live life to the fullest

R - Respect – you can’t change everyone, but you can give respect to them. Just be alive comes with all kinds of stresses, and we should respect people, as well as be empathetic to the way they have learned to think about life and the World, by doing our best to understand them.

Interview with eSyndicat creator, Simon Gooffin

May 23, 2007

 eSyndicat Directory Script

eSyndicat directory software is one of the most commonly used search engine friendly web directory software on the Internet today. Temi Odurinde Interviewed Simon Gooffin, eSyndicat directory software creator for UK Webmaster Forums. Excerpts from the interview follows:

Temi Odurinde: When you created eSyndicat, did you ever imagine it would be this successful?
Simon Goofin: At first I was not going to give it to the public but later when a first version was ready I thought it would be great to share it with other webmasters. Of course it was for free and we still have a free version. It does not meat it’s bad if it’s free. Our eSyndiCat Omega version is really great. We spent more than a year for its development and testing. I hope it will be #1 directory software among free scripts (to be honest I’m sure it will be ). Later I got many requests asking for new features and our members were ready to pay. So we started to develop Professional edition for our software. Here I already knew one thing – we must be #1 otherwise we should not even start. With this idea in my head we started to work.

Temi Odurinde: eSyndicate offer so much value, how did you manage to achieve this?
Simon Goofin:
Well, the answer is easy to understand. We use KISS approach. There are quite many people on the net who don’t have good knowledge of computers. It might be quite difficult for them to install plugins, modules, configure everything. That’s why we created a full-featured software that’s easily managed from one admin panel. We will also make new features and functionality in our next versions and it will be full featured by default. Now we are also working on our own modular system. We should offer something really great that’s out of just a simple niche – directory software. We have plans for making some custom packages like classifieds, etc. But this is another story.

Temi Odurinde: You offer unparallel support services, how are you able to offer this and still have such a competitively priced product?
Simon Goofin:
Now we have about 10 persons involved in eSyndiCat project development, support and testing. We will work even more to provide even better services. We know how important support is. It’s great to get fast and good help. We are also customers of some other companies like Jelsoft (vBulletin), Kayako and we’d like to get fast help. That’s the reason we try to offer the same.

What makes a good directory?

April 19, 2007

One of new users at Webmaster Forum UK, Funky Pilchard the webmaster of HeyDJ has just started his Webmastering career, well not exactly a career in Webmastering but as part of promoting his Dance Music online shop he visited webmaster forums for advices. He quickly learn all the ins and outs of submitting a website to web directory and wrote and very good post about his experienced in a mini article called “What makes a good Directory” excerpts from his post lists three of the ten points he evaluated web directories against:

I noticed varying levels of web sites listed, I thought you may be interested to know of the my thoughts from the perspective of someone listing with a directory.

1. First thing is.. how easy is it to find the category you want to list in from the home page, some dirs are so flippin confusing that you need a degree in rocket science just to navigate to the right place to list, usually the sites that are listed well at first glance are best for me. I don’t mind clicking to sub categories but the ones easiest are usually listed alphabetically.. or at least well orientated.

2. The web site gains points for looking clean and not too fussy or messy, too much advertising and distractions on the home page just clutter everything up and make it hard to find where to submit, if it’s not easy I’m onto the next dir.

3. Make the submission button easily visible, the best way to submit seems to be.. a) without having to navigate to the category first, make the submit/add url button visible on the nav bar or alike (then allow me to choose my desired category from a drop down menu (multiple drop down menus are best but they should be the first thing you do, so that I don’t fill in all my info then realise when I choose the drop down categories I lose the data I just typed) b) If you search your category first, make the add url button visible at the nav bar or bottom (some sites seem to take you different places whether you click on add url at nav bar or bottom of page which is really confusing).
