PHP Open Source Licensing

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

May newcomers to the world of Internet get what open source licensing is about wrong. Even some supposedly experienced Internet users as well, even a programmer. The programmer in question added some open source code to a proprietary software.
Anyway, a nice beginners open source licensing post was made by scripter at UK WW today. Excerpts from his post goes as follows:

So, you’ve managed to write your first “useful” PHP script, and want to make it open source, let the world enjoy your work. But however you decide to use your scripts, as long as you use them publicly, they need a LICENSE, since no software falls outside the bounds of international law.

Your have multiple licensing options - if you want to make some money (and your script or application is really useful and truly fit for a particular purpose), you may launch your script as commercialware, hence people should pay to use your application. Or you may make it shareware, allowing anyone to use a slightly restricted version of your software, and if anyone feels your software fits his purposes, he may pay for the full version. Another option would be freeware, which means you’d release your software freely, allowing anyone to use it at no charge.

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Link Bid Script (LBS) install is growing in leaps and bounds. It was recently made available to prospective bidding directory owners via UK WW a few weeks ago; it is rapidly becoming very popular. Before the download was moved to UK Webmaster Forums, over 100 copies of LBS bidding script was downloaded, at the time this post was being written, download counter at UK WW stood at one hundred and twelve, taking downloaded copies of LBS so far past the two hundred mark.

The rapid growth of Link Bid Script is not just due to the fact that it’s free. Most of the Webmaster that uses Link Bid Script commends the support services that come with the package. The Link Bid Script team help novice Webmaster install the script and give assistance to experienced webmasters that struggles with the install.

One webmaster, loredan who already have a PHPLD powered bidding directory recently come across LBS when he was shopping around for a bidding script to power a network of thirty bidding directory he is planning. After installing a copy of LBS, loredan was so impressed that he decided to use LBS to power his new thirty stop bidding directory network, he has this to say:I was planning to start a network of bidding directories based on phpld but after I’ve seen and tried LBS, I think this is the best option :).  Another Webmaster butternyk chooses LBS to power his network of ten bidding directories, which the Link Bid Script team is installing for him free of charge. Though link bid script is enjoying rapid growth, the templates available for LBS sites is quite limited, there is a total of five templates at the moment, but LBS management team said five new additional templates has been commission, this will take the number of available templates to ten.
