Local business Internet marketing is changing every day. As competition grows and offline businesses become more and more “SEO savvy” the chances of an up and coming businesses to do well in the SERPs diminishes as the time and money put into the Internet marketing campaigns of existing businesses in the area puts them substantially ahead of the curve.

And though this is very true in many areas of the country -particular for large metropolitan areas like Detroit, Chicago, New York, etc. – the low populated areas of the nation are still largely available for SERPs take over.

The only problem is that these areas have virtually no keyword measuring capabilities. A phrase like “Detroit Roofing” is measurable using keyword tools like the one that Google provides for free, but if the local business you are providing SEO services for resides in a low populated area, then tools like this are virtually useless for preparing an Internet marketing campaign. So what do you do?

Using Pay Per Click

There are many different roads you can take when you are planning a SEO campaign for a local business – some better than others. However there is one dominant strategy that has proven results. This strategy involves not making one website, but 5-15 websites depending on the extent of the businesses reach city wise. But before you start creating websites you have to know what your targeted keywords are. So how do you figure out exactly what it is that you want to be optimizing for in these low populated search markets? The answer is Google AdWords. Before you start creating more websites (which we will talk about later in this article) you want to use PPC with their (usually existing) brand-able web site – meaning that the domain name is usually owned by them or if it isn’t then you will probably be setting it up for them. This site will act as guinea pig A.

Using PPC for this website will help you gather all the keyword information necessary. Over a period of a couple months, you should be able to tell which keywords would be the best money makers for that business. And with that knowledge it’s time to start creating some websites that will be available for rent.

The Unstoppable Funnel

Once you know what keywords you want to rank for, it is time to start looking at purchasing some domain names which are made up of city/service or city/product keywords. The good thing about providing service for a company that is located in these kinds of areas is that the domain names are still widely available where as in large metropolitan areas you might have to pay as much as $3,000.00 to purchase a very good domain name. After you pick all of the domain names that you feel would deeply benefit the business, build out the websites using the triangle theory.

Side Note: The triangle theory comes from a Google research project back in 2005. It showed that users first look at the left side of a website in the shape of a triangle. This is where you should try to put your phone number, any free estimate forms, and your logo.

Your link building should be very minimal. Since you are in an area where the competition for the keywords should be very low, you should be able rank very easily for the targeted keyword phrase with 10-15 high quality links. This is because Google puts a lot of weight on the exact match domain names, and having one will give you a great chance in ranking for those desired keywords.

After your websites are up and running and ranking in the top of the SERPs for 5-10 different exact match keywords (not to mention anything else that you may be ranking for) it is time to rent out the sites – and the best part is that you already have a potential client!
