It looks like iMovie might be seeing a metamorphosis soon, as it performs a transition from what we know into something a lot bigger.
The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office officially lists Apple’s iMovie as a registered trademark under application number 2,723, 051 dating back to July 2003 in addition to application number 75/782,838 officially registered in China dating back to August 1999; however, on August 22, the European Office of Harmonization published Apple’s latest trademark/service mark application number 005269221 for ‘IMOVIE.’
Apple has changes
in view for iMovie, and has taken space to ensure that it has the legal elbow room to make them.
The new filling expands on the original one, which only listed International Class 9 covering computer hardware and software, to include International Classes 38, 41 and 42 which cover communications and telecommunications services, entertainment and education services, provision of electronic publications, providing on-line electronic publications and computer hardware and software consulting services, rental of computer hardware and software apparatus and equipment.
Now, iMovie can do a lot more than it used to be able to do on paper, and – in light of Apple’s upcoming ‘Showtime’ event – it seems very likely that the new movie service that has been much talked about will be handled out through iMovie, so that it may become to inline movie buying what iTunes is to online music buying. This means that it is also likely that TV shows will be moved over to iMovie, as they didn’t really belong in iTunes anyway. However, if Apple does indeed make this move, that would mean that all of the Windows using world will be shut out, as there will be no Windows version of iMovie…
