Friday, June 23rd, 2006
Haven established the reasons for the need to build inbound links to your websites in the first part of this article; the second and final part looks at ways you can build quality inbound links free of charge. With just a little bit of time and some quality contents, you can build long lasting quality inbound links to your website.
The top ten link building techniques that has worked for the author is listed below, a short explanation of how the technique works follows in subsequent paragraphs.
1.      Create resources for higher education students and get Universities to recommend your resources by linking to it.
2.      Submit your website to free web directories.
3.      Write an article for articles website.
4.      Write a press release about your site and submit it to news/press release sites.
5.      Encourage your site users to link to your site by creating a ‘link to us’ page.
6.      Contribute regularly to a forum or blog; opportunity to make refer to your site occurs now and again.
7.      Exchange 3 way links.
8.      Submit your site for review or rating.
9.      Participate in awards program.
10.   Offer free web space to young webmasters in exchange for a link to your site.

Higher education institutions such as Universities and Colleges are highly rated by most search engines, getting a links to point to your site from a College or University will give your site a very high quality inbound link.
Getting such link is not necessarily as difficult at you probably imagine, creating a simple resource for example creating a simple CV preparation wizard that helps students prepare their CV is useful enough tool, then contact the webmaster of the section responsible for helping student find jobs at a University or College and you could have a powerful link pointing to your site.
The second link building techniques is the most popular, submitting your website to as free web directories. There are hundreds if not thousands of free web directories of various qualities from highly regarded web directory like DMOZ to smaller free web directories that are little more than a link farm.  You can find a list of free web directories here.
Articles are quite popular on the Internet, write an article on a topic you are comfortable with, at the footer of articles, authors are usually allowed a short information about themselves and a link to their site, submitting your articles to as many articles sites as possible would gain you valuable links.
You can write and submit a press release about your website to press release sites, this is not a vary common way of building links, but a number of press release sites exists and they are happy to distribute your press release free of charge.
Creating a simple; link to us’ page on your site with a simple code that visitors to that page can copy and past is an effective way of getting inbound links. Some visitors to your site may appreciate the contents of you site and want to recommend your site to other people, making linking to your site as easy as possible would help you gain inbound links.
Contribute to forums and blogs regularly, during forum discussions, it may be appropriate to mention your site and naturally drop a link to your site in the thread, this is counted by search engines as inbound link to your website.
You should exchange links with site with similar contents or are within the same industry as your site. Direct link exchange is frowned upon by most search engines so getting your link partner to link to you from his site while you link to his site from a third site is a very effective way of building inbound links
There are quite a few websites and forums out there that organise some sort of peer reviews, you should submit your website for other webmasters to comment on it, part of the submission is usually a link to where you site can be viewed, this a good opportunity to gain valuable informational about your website and to build inbound links.
There are a number of websites that give awards to other websites, part of the award is usually a link to the site participating in the award programme, submit your site, even if you do not win any awards, you gain valuable inbound links from the award site
And finally, if you have spare capacity on your web hosting account, offer younger webmasters who cannot afford web hosting some space in exchange for linking to your site.
Happy link building :)

Build inbound links for free - Part 1

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

Once upon a time on the Internet, promoting websites was a child’s play, and this is no joke. There was a report of a 12 year old that put his personal homepage online, promoting it by submitting the site to search engines, directories and getting his friends to link to the site. The site ended up on page 1 position 1 on all the major search engines, for highly competitive keywords.

The same is still possible now, buy highly unlikely. To achieve page 1 position 1 for a decent keyword is now extremely difficult and very expensive. Back then; the number of documents on the Internet is not half of what is online today, and most large companies who thought Internet was a fad that would fade with time have now embraced it, spending millions of dollars to buy important keywords.

Note that the word used is ‘difficult’ and not ‘impossible’ however to achieve page 1 position 1 for any given keyword requires lots of work in the form of link building (it goes without saying that the site must be well designed and well optimised).

Building quality inbound links is one of the most important requirements to achieving decent position on search engines. In the days when 12 year olds achieve page 1 position 1, building inbound links was mostly free, including submitting your site to Yahoo directory. Today, Yahoo charge £199 per year to list a website in its directory. There are hundreds of web directory and websites charging anything from £1 to several thousands to place a link to your website.

All hope is not lost yet, for website owners trying to achieve a good position in search engine for free, like it used to be in the good old days of the Internet. In the next instalment, this article will show you how to build quality links by exploring the top ten free link-building opportunities.

Countries and Regions

Saturday, June 10th, 2006

Now and again in the middle of a project a trivial seeming but crucial piece of the puzzle goes missing, today the missing puzzle in my project was a list of countries and their regions or states. I have a quick look on Wikipeadia but I could not find a concise list, I had to spend a few hours compiling the list from various source, I believe I now have a complete list of countries and regions of the world. Webmasters or anyone else for that matter who need this information can download it from here. If you spot a mistake in the list please let me know.  The file is in CSV format, click here to view it.
